On the Fourth of July as we celebrate Independence Day, it provides an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the true meaning of our citizenship. To be American is about so much more than simply a place that we call home. It is about a deeply felt commitment to the higher principles of liberty, self-governance and equality.
Independence Day reminds us to be grateful for the blessings that our freedom represents and for the opportunities that it provides. We are all humbled in remembrance of the courageous men and women who have served and sacrificed to preserve and protect our liberties.
America is working through a challenging period in our history. We have always overcome difficult times through our continuing commitment to construct a great nation that is built on freedom, national unity, and social justice. We must widen the circle of opportunity for all citizens through that same hopeful vision of liberty and equality.
As we embrace the challenges before us, I am confident that we will remain a nation that is caring to our neighbors in need and generous to those who are struggling. Patriotism comes in various forms, but it always involves serving something bigger than ourselves.
