Altec’s Innovation Challenge

Hosted annually, Altec’s Innovation Challenge encourages high school students to team up and address a real-world problem that benefits their local community through innovation and STEM-based problem solving. Teams then get to hone their presentation skills by sharing their solution, with the winning team receiving $10,000 to implement their project.

The Innovation Challenge is not only a chance for Altec to give back to the communities, but it also allows students exposure to real-world careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields—the fastest growing career area year after year.

Below, get a recap of the four Innovation Challenges hosted companywide.

Creedmoor

Altec’s Creedmoor location held its second annual Innovation Challenge at the Granville County Expo Center. Three teams participated from J.F. Webb, South Granville, and Oxford Prep High Schools and presented their innovative ideas to help their communities with an issue they actively face for a chance to bring their ideas to life.

Congratulations to the winning team from South Granville High School for their proposal to introduce a vending machine to their school that dispenses free hygiene products for students in need.

Elizabethtown

Altec’s Elizabethtown location held its sixth annual Innovation Challenge at the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College Regional Postsecondary Center. Four teams from Elizabethtown High School, one team from Hardin County Schools, and one team North Hardin High School presented their innovative ideas. Congratulate the winning team, Under 10 Seconds from North Hardin School, for their proposal to install metal hooks on concrete walls in each classroom of their school to ensure locking in less than 10 seconds with a few clicks of a tie strap in case of an intruder emergency.

Roanoke

Altec’s Roanoke location held its third annual Innovation Challenge at the historic Hotel Roanoke. Five spectacular groups of students from across the Roanoke Valley presented their innovative ideas with the Lucky Lab Rats from Roanoke Valley Governors School taking home the prize. Their proposal calls for solar-powered charging stations and climate-controlled AED-equipped trail huts on the Appalachian Trail to ensure hikers have access to emergency communication and life-saving resources in critical moments.

Birmingham

Altec’s Birmingham location held their annual Innovation Challenge at the Altec corporate office. Congratulations to the winning group, the ID Connectors from Ramsay High School, for their proposal to create a STEM-based digital student ID system to improve speed, precision and security in their school and school transportation system.

Altec to Showcase AC40E Boom Truck Crane at ConExpo 2026

Altec is proud to announce that the AC40E-152S telescopic boom truck crane will make its return as a displayed piece of Altec equipment at booth F44042 at ConExpo 2026. When configured for aerial operation, it is one of Altec’s highest-reaching aerial devices.

The LLEAP-Award-winning AC40E includes a patented Dual Entry Cab that provides safe access throughout the superstructure’s entire range of rotation. The optional 20° tilt feature delivers a clear view overhead. As with all Altec products, the AC40E is backed by the industry’s leading national support network and warranty protection.

As a material hoisting device, this machine features a maximum capacity of 80,000 pounds and is equipped with a six-section main boom with 152 feet of maximum extended length. As an A92.2 aerial device, the AC40E features a 1,200 pound-capacity platform and a maximum working height of 222 feet. The dual rating minimizes setup time and the amount of equipment needed on a project.

In addition, the AC40E’s patented, quick-attach platform reduces installation time with a lightweight bracket that secures to the main boom, the end of the jib or the optional composite reach extension. Once the bracket is attached to any of those locations, the operator can simply extend the boom until the bracket engages the platform. Longer outrigger cylinders allow easy setup on uneven terrain, reduce the amount of cribbing needed, minimize setup time and enable more payload space on the truck.

For the first time at ConExpo, Altec will also exhibit Altec Teupen equipment. The industry-leading solution for small set-up areas, Altec Teupen products are able to traverse steep grades and rough terrain. Each machine is built with unparalleled safety and reliability and backed by Altec’s nationwide service network.

Altec will display the Altec Teupen TL127AJplus, a spider lift that features a 127-foot articulating and telescopic boom and an 882-pound platform capacity. This unit offers rapid point to point access for the most difficult to reach applications. Additionally, the Altec Teupen TC89AJplus will be displayed. This spider lift represents the next generation of standard features for future Altec Teupen models. It features an 89-foot articulating and telescopic boom with a newly designed high performance boom system that provides smooth boom operation and stability aloft.

In addition to the AC65E and Altec Teupen units, Altec’s HD35A-12 pressure digger, AT41M articulating telescopic aerial device, MudDog Hydrovac 1200 Vacuum Excavator and CB5-132D-S mechanic’s truck will also be displayed at ConExpo.

ConExpo attendees will be able to visit booth N-10809 to explore equipment disposition services offered through JJ Kane. JJ Kane conducts absolute, online auctions open to the public, making it possible for buyers to bid from anywhere on comprehensive and transparent listings.
