Altec Green Fleet: Sustainable Solutions

As companies look for ways to implement sustainable solutions in their fleets, Altec is working to develop new systems that will make trucks operate more efficiently while reducing the impact on the environment.

JEMS® (Jobsite Energy Management System) is Altec’s integrated plug-in system that uses stored electrical energy to power the aerial device, tools and exportable power. The energy storage system is recharged by plugging into shore power or by the truck’s internal combustion engine.

This innovative, patented technology eliminates idle time on the job site, reduces fuel consumption, decreases the carbon footprint and lessens noise pollution. JEMS also complies with anti-idle legislation.

Whether you are motivated by government regulations, environmental consciousness or cost-savings for your business, JEMS® can assist in your efforts to maintain a sustainable fleet.

Heartland: Tree Takedowns with Increased Safety, Efficiency, and Productivity

Tree Takedowns with Increased Safety, Efficiency, and Productivity

Let’s take a moment to consider some of the main priorities of all tree care and utility companies. Most would agree that safety is top priority. Efficiency and productivity are other aspects of the job considered when accepting jobs for the week, as well as the return on investment of equipment and personnel resources directly affecting a company. All of these priorities factor into the overall success of a company. With these elements in mind, Altec engineered Heartland, a unit designed to allow operators to cut limbs safely without ever having to leave the ground or touch a piece of the tree.

What is Heartland?

Heartland, or the Altec EC175-5S-FG, has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 33,000 pounds. It is a Freightliner chassis with a log body, an Effer articulated-and-telescoping boom crane, and a 360-degree, continuous-rotation grapple saw. The maximum hook height is 60 feet, while the maximum horizontal reach is 49 feet. The unit is operated completely by a radio remote control.

“This unit is unique in that it is the first completely engineered piece of equipment dedicated to tree and limb removal,” said Andy Price, Altec Tree Care Market Manager. “We believe we are marketing a product that is a safer method to take down a tree, or limbs overhanging structures.”

How it Works

Heartland Remote ControlThe operator starts by setting up the Heartland unit near the tree being taken down. By remote control, the grapple saw cuts and holds a branch or limb and then puts it directly onto the chipper feed table. When only the trunk is remaining, the grapple saw can grab it and cut diameters within its capacity into sections and lay them in the truck’s log body.

Not only does the remote control allow the operator to stand away from a potentially hazardous jobsite, it also allows for the limbs and trunk to be put directly into the log body. This minimizes the number of wood piles that are laid on the ground, which reduces turf damage and crew cleanup time.

Dan Voss, Certified Arborist and owner of Voss Treemendous Tree Service, was heavily involved in the design of Heartland. Already a long-time customer of Altec’s, Voss created a prototype in 2015 featuring similar components now seen on Altec’s Heartland unit. After two years of R&D alongside Altec, the Heartland product was born and Voss is proud to say he’s taken down more than 5,000 trees in three years, most of them from the comfort of his lawn chair.

Design Features

The grapple saw was designed specifically for use at the end of a knuckle boom crane and has special safety and mechanical features for superior performance. The grapple has a 33-inch jaw opening with a 14-inch cutting depth and a maximum lift capacity of 3,300 pounds. On one side of the truck, a hydraulic grapple saw carrier not only stores the grapple saw behind the cab, but also positions the grapple on the ground, allowing it to be connected to the crane by one operator without leaving the ground. Opposite the carrier, between the body and cab, is a holder for turf mats, which can be used to prevent damage when operating on soft turf.

One design feature in particular that Altec’s new product development team carefully engineered is the arm running from the tip of the crane to the grapple.

“We all knew there would be times we’d want to remove a limb at a crotch, but could not get to it the way we wanted,” Price said. “We modified this piece to a point where we can do it virtually any way we want. We dictate how it comes down, not the tree. With that arm and connections, we also have multiple pivot points, and these pivot points articulate as the cut weight shifts from the tree to the machine, which helps protect the crane.”

Heartland also features a quick hydraulic disconnect system at the end of the knuckle boom, which allows a single operator to connect and disconnect all four hydraulic lines at once.

Safety

The safety aspect of the unit is clear by the nature of its design.

“We’re able to remove a great portion of the trees while eliminating the risk of putting a person in the tree,” said Eric Bray, Vice President and Co-Owner of All Reliable Services, Inc. (ARS). ARS is a full-service utility pole line clearing company located in Jacksonville, Florida.

“We’re really trying to work towards being safer and working smarter, not harder,” said Lance Wallace, owner of Wallace Tree and Landscape. Wallace has been a tree climber for 25 years with the last 15 years focusing on safety training. With his tenure in the industry, Lance said one of the biggest challenges for tree climbers is the length of their career. “No longer do arborists have to think about climbing so many years before their bodies are fatigued, and they must find something else to do. This machine gives you the opportunity to still be at the front lines of being an arborist and doing tree care. And above all, it’s a much safer way to perform the work.”

Increased Efficiency and Productivity

Bray said the increased efficiency has been one of the greatest impacts at ARS: “With this unit, I’ve cut my costs of removing a tree by two-thirds. This is passed through to my customers in the form of significant savings.”

“Heartland is so easy and efficient to set up that by the time the crane is up in the air and working, we’d still be putting on our climbing gear, setting rope, and securing the jobsite with cones, a task that would typically take an hour or more,” said Wallace.

In general, the owners of the Altec Heartland unit report that they have doubled the amount of work for a day—and with reduced manpower.

Following Hurricane Irma’s impact on Florida, Bray took his Heartland unit to assist with storm recovery. “At the dispatch yard, the tree departments and line maintenance construction departments of the hosting utility were fighting for that unit. Not only did we cut down trees, we used the unit to cut the wooden line poles. With that machine, we did the work of a four man crew in a quarter of the time.”

Looking Forward

For the electric utility industry, equipment like Heartland is still relatively new as most utilities don’t perform their own tree care work. However, utilities are learning more about remote controlled tree removal devices from the tree care companies they contract with for utility line clearance. Several utilities have arranged demos with their contractors to see what Heartland can do. Again, it’s a machine that can cut time and costs for the tree contractor, which passes through to the utility in savings.

The non-insulating unit can be used near energized lines provided OSHA minimum approach distances are maintained. The ability to operate remotely reduces exposure to step and touch potential hazard because operators no longer need to remain near the unit during operation.

Heartland Remote ControlAltec believes the market for this equipment will grow as the crane mounted grapple saws are developed and modified.

“This machine is going to change the industry as we know it,” said Bray. “When I was working on a crew trimming trees, I used to tell my guys that there’s going to be something that hooks to this bucket that’s going to do this for us.”

Bray compared the Heartland unit to the telephone shoe from 1960s television series Get Smart when he said: “We all said ‘yeah right’ to the idea of a cell phone, but that came.” Now the Heartland product has too.

Altec also offers the EC225-6S-FG, which is the second version of Heartland. The EC225-6S-FG consists of a 33,000-gvwr Freightliner chassis, an Effer 225 6S crane, and a 360-degree, continuous-rotation grapple saw. This model provides an additional seven feet of cutting height and has a rear-mounted configuration, allowing operators to set-up 10 to 12 feet closer to the tree. The EC505-6S+3S-FG, which offers an extended reach of 92 ft is Altec’s latest Heartland model.

Which Equipment Lease is Best for You?

When making a large equipment purchase, financing is an important part of the transaction. With so many ways to finance and multiple companies to choose from, it is helpful to know all available options and, more importantly, the best one for your business.

Altec Capital’s focus is to create value for our customers through personalized service and tailored solutions. Below are Altec Capital’s traditional lease options which can be customized to meet your individual needs. See which one best fits your business.

FMV

The Fair Market Value Lease (FMV) minimizes equipment lifecycle costs and maximizes equipment utilization. This lease is ideal for companies that desire the latest technology and equipment on the market. The FMV is essentially a long term usage agreement with terms ranging from 3-10 years. At lease maturity, customers can return the equipment, continue to lease on a month to month basis or purchase the equipment at its fair market value. The FMV has the ultimate flexibility and is often used by companies that want the latest equipment with shorter lifecycles. Newer equipment means less downtime and more reliability.

Benefits:

  • Typically has the lowest monthly payment
  • Provides terms to match needs and lifecycle objectives
  • Conserves working capital
  • Eliminates end of lease risks
  • Can have significant tax advantages

TRAC

The TRAC lease allows for all of the advantages of leasing while retaining the option to purchase the equipment at the end of the lease term for a pre-determined balloon, called a terminal rental adjustment clause (TRAC). TRAC leases are popular with companies that want lower monthly payments but desire the benefits of ownership at lease maturity. The TRAC lease has lower monthly payments than traditional finance options due to depreciation benefits retained by Altec Capital. These benefits are passed on to the customer in the form of a lower payment than traditional loans.

Benefits:

  • Improved cash flow
  • Lower monthly payments
  • Limited upfront costs

$1 Buyout

The $1 Buyout lease is similar to the TRAC lease, but the company owns the equipment throughout its lifecycle. This option enables companies to report the asset on their balance sheets and take any tax benefits associated with that asset.

Benefits:

  • Fixed interest rate
  • Ownership
  • Flexible payment options
  • 100% Financing

Equipment Finance Agreement

An Equipment Finance Agreement is similar to the $1 Buyout Lease except that it is not a lease. This option is preferred by companies looking to preserve their credit lines and use traditional financing for their equipment acquisitions.

Benefits:

  • Uses Altec’s credit line which preserves working capital
  • 100% Financing

With representatives located throughout the United States, Altec Capital is available to answer any equipment financing questions you may have. Because we build the equipment, our team has the product and industry knowledge to provide the financing options that will maximize profitability and productivity for your business.

May the Best #Beardo Win

Beard Contest WinnerIn December, Altec began their search for the hard-hat-wearing worker with the best beard. Conveniently, many participants were already growing out their beards for “No Shave November,” while others began to grow their beards right away in hopes of winning a prize. To enter, contestants had to upload the best photograph of their beard and hope for the best. The Top 10 contestants received a T-shirt and hard hat sticker, while the winner received a Yeti Cooler.

So, who was the #Beardo that started 2018 with a new Yeti Cooler?

Judson Fisher, a resident of Appleton, Wisconsin and employee of TLC Sign, is the winner of our Beardo competition. We sat down with Judson to ask him some questions about his life and first place beard.

Q: Where do you work?

A: I’ve worked for TLC Sign, a family owned company, for about a year and a half. I started as a service technician and installer and am now the operations manager. I am familiar with the Altec products that we have in our fleet; they serve us very well and are adaptive for the type of business that we are in. I also run my own business where I remodel and flip homes.

Q: What do you do in your free time?

A: Before children I was a huge soccer player. I have friends who play professionally and I played in college. Now I have 4 kids so a lot of my time is spent with them. I’ve also learned how to hunt and fish since I moved to Wisconsin a few years ago. My wife is an avid hunter and has a bigger buck on the wall than I do.

Q: How do you maintain your beard?

A:  I’ve been growing my beard for about 5 years now. Believe it or not, my wife makes all of my beard products herself, including my beard oil and beard balm. Typically, I wash and condition it every two to three days. After washing my beard, I comb it and apply my homemade products.

Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve gotten stuck in your beard?

A: My 5-year-old likes to hide his Legos in it.

Q: How often do people ask to touch your beard?

A: Many people ask to touch my beard. Surprisingly I get more compliments from men than I do women.

Congratulations to Judson and thank you to all who entered our Beardo competition!

To stay up-to-date on future contests, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Exploring Tax Breaks and 4th Quarter Equipment Financing Benefits

Please note: The information in this article applies to 2017 and may not apply to current year. To get updated information, please contact Altec Capital at (888)408-8148.

As we approach the end of the 4th quarter, the mid-quarter convention is an important topic of discussion for companies managing their equipment purchases.

The mid-quarter convention applies if more than 40% of your total annual equipment purchases are placed in service during the 4th quarter of the tax year. If less than 40% is placed in service during the 4th quarter, companies can use the half-year convention for tax depreciation purposes.  The half-year convention means that a company can take a six-month tax depreciation deduction no matter when an asset is placed into service during the year.  The mid-quarter convention means that a company begins tax depreciation in the middle of the quarter the asset is placed into service, which reduces the tax deduction for assets placed in service during the second half of the year.  So, by acquiring your equipment using a tax lease instead of a straight capital purchase, you can shift the ownership for tax purposes to Altec Capital and it will not count against your percentage limit for the mid-quarter convention. By doing this, you are still able to select the exact assets you need, and retain the rights to purchase or return equipment at the end of the lease.

An added benefit of using a tax lease in the 4th quarter is taking advantage of the best rates of the year from Altec Capital because of the increased tax benefits. Another point to consider is tax break changes that go into effect after December 31, 2017. The bonus depreciation benefit moves from 50% to 40% in 2018, which can positively impact your bottom line if you enter into an equipment lease in the 4th quarter this year.

With multiple leasing options, Altec Capital can assist you with transferring your equipment to lease. To speak with an Altec Capital representative on how you can take advantage of 4th quarter leasing benefits, call (888) 408-8148.

Altec in the Tundra: An Aerial for the Alaskan Arctic

North to Alaska

During the month of September, a team of three Altec associates from our St. Joseph campus traveled over 3,000 miles to northern Alaska to deliver, mount and complete a TA50 for ConocoPhillips, an opportunity discovered and presented by Altec account manager Nick Zevenbergen. The team worked tirelessly on the project in Alaska for over two weeks, which was the longest on-site project completed to date by associates at St. Joseph. Ron Steele, associate with Altec Service, agreed, “Altec has done some big jobs up there before but not quite as big as this one.”

In preparation for the Alaska delivery, a team of Altec associates built the TA50 at our St. Joseph facility. A team from Carlile Transportation, a trucking company based out of Alaska and featured on the television series Ice Road Truckers, hauled the TA50 and a crate of loose parts to Kuparuk, Alaska, a journey that took ten days. The Kuparuk oilfield (the nation’s second largest by area) is 40 miles west of the giant Prudhoe Bay field on Alaska’s northern coast.

Once the truck arrived at its destination, Jorge Arambula, Frank Potochnick and Tim Stutzman, the Altec team traveling from St. Joseph, made their journey to Anchorage, Alaska where they attended a mandatory eight-hour safety session required of all people going to work in the oilfields. On September 12th, the team finally arrived in Kuparuk to begin their job.

The Altec team worked to mount the TA50 on a trailer that is certified by ADEC, an environmental consultant, to traverse 300 square miles of tundra without destroying the vegetation. The machine and the Altec boom will enable ConocoPhillips to provide maintenance to more than 3,000 powerline poles that are throughout the tundra area.

To mount the TA50 on the trailer, the team worked in thirty-degree weather for long hours each day. Arambula said, “We made a great team; we worked together every day for twelve, thirteen, fourteen hours. It was a great experience.”

Arambula was not too concerned about the cold, but he explained that the rain and snow made the job much more difficult. Potochnick agreed, saying the project “had a little bit of everything in it.” He elaborated, “It was exciting; it was a challenge; there were times when the place was beautiful; it was cold; it was windy; it was raining; it was snowing.” However, Potochnick welcomed the new experience as he learned about the different work environments in which people must function.

Despite the rough weather, Arambula added that the hardest part of the project was “staying away from my family for two and a half weeks.”

The team in Alaska and associates at St. Joseph kept in good contact with one another throughout the project. Steele stated, “Frank, Jorge and Tim would communicate with me on how things were going, where they were in the process and if there were some parts that they needed. I kept all of the project information with me and made myself available to them 24/7 until the job was completed.”

Arambula agreed, adding, “We had a great support group from manufacturing to management.”

When the job was finally complete two weeks later, associates provided training to ConocoPhillips employees and contractors before returning home on September 26th.

After the harsh Alaska weather, associates were glad to be home again. They each appreciated the once in a lifetime event. Potochnick explained, “The sense of accomplishment and pride that I have is all thanks to Altec. The project wouldn’t have been possible without their support.”
