Illuminating the Workspace: The Crucial Role of Quality Lighting at Job Sites

When it comes to optimizing productivity and ensuring a safe work environment, the significance of quality lighting at job sites cannot be overstated. Whether you’re working on a construction site, in a warehouse, on the roadside, or any industrial setting, proper illumination plays a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency, reducing accidents, and fostering better overall working conditions.

Safety First

One of the primary reasons why quality lighting is paramount at job sites is the direct impact it has on safety. Inadequate lighting can lead to accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. Well-lit workspaces empower employees to navigate through the site confidently, identify potential hazards, and avoid obstacles.

Consider a construction site where workers are moving heavy equipment or navigating complex structures. Insufficient lighting can turn these tasks into potential dangers. Well-placed, bright lights ensure that every step is taken with precision, minimizing the risk of accidents and promoting a secure working environment.

Boosting Awareness and Focus

Quality lighting not only enhances physical safety but also contributes to mental alertness and focus. Proper illumination reduces eye strain, fatigue, and headaches, creating a more comfortable and conducive atmosphere for work. Employees can maintain higher levels of concentration, leading to improved accuracy in tasks and a more efficient workflow.

Meeting Regulatory Standards

Adhering to lighting standards set by regulatory bodies is not just a box to tick; it’s a commitment to the well-being of your coworkers. Quality lighting at job sites ensures compliance with safety regulations, avoiding legal issues and penalties. By investing in appropriate lighting solutions, businesses demonstrate their commitment to providing a secure and compliant work environment.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

In addition to safety and productivity, quality lighting can also contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability. For example, LED lighting not only provides bright and consistent illumination but also consumes less energy, resulting in lower utility bills and a reduced environmental footprint.

It’s important to realize how quality lighting at job sites extends beyond mere visibility. It is a cornerstone of safety, awareness, and overall workplace well-being. Companies that prioritize proper lighting invest in the longevity and success of their business by creating a work environment where employees can thrive.

When you illuminate your workplace with Altec Supply, you’ll discover how light guides the way to a safer and more productive future for your organization and your crewmates. Visit the Altec Supply store today to see our variety of lighting options for indoor and outdoor settings.

Safety is Cool: Tips for Being Prepared and Safe During Winter Weather

Winter season will be here before you know it, but are you ready for the tough storms and bitter cold? Winter can be an especially challenging time for our customers in utility, telecommunications and tree care, and its unique challenges often require special attention to safety and security on the job. What’s more, power outages are happening twice as often in serious weather disasters, putting an even greater strain on utility workers across the country.

So what can you do to stay safe while working outdoors in winter? We have a few suggestions:

Proper equipment and clothing

Dressing with thicker, warmer layers is obvious enough, but what many don’t consider is the importance of staying dry and free of perspiration which reduces your internal body temperature as it evaporates. Having pants, jackets, and shirts with moisture-wicking can make a big difference.

In the same vein, having specialized PPE equipment for winter is essential for staying safe on the job. Whether it’s anti-fog safety glasses or insulated jackets with high-visibility colors, being easily seen and seeing easily helps prevent accidents.

Safe driving

Driving from work site to work site means a lot of hours on the road, and winter weather usually presents some of the most dangerous road conditions imaginable. While safe driving is always a focus for our customers, icy roads are a particular concern at this time of year. Driving at reasonable speeds is important as always but having work trucks equipped with helpful accessories like exterior vehicle lights, bucket covers, or backup cameras sometimes gets overlooked.

Learn the signs of cold weather health risks

Freezing, windy weather also brings specific health risks to workers spending extended hours in the elements like frostbite or hypothermia. These conditions have common tell-tale signs to look out for as a warning that your crew should address right away. For example, feelings of numbness, muscle stiffness, and discolored skin are some of the symptoms you should expect from frostbite.

One more way you can improve your working crew’s safety is by participating in our winter safety kit giveaway coming soon on Altec’s Facebook and Instagram. We’ll randomly select a winner in mid-December 2023, so be on the lookout for a notification if you’re chosen.

On behalf of Altec Supply, we encourage all our customers and families to stay safe during the winter season and to promote safety on the job at all times of the year. If you need new safety or winter preparedness equipment for your crews visit our online Supply store, contact your local account manager, or call 1-877-GO-ALTEC.

Maximize the Life of Your Altec Boom Truck Crane

Advanced engineering and rigorous testing make Altec boom truck cranes a reliable workhorse for your fleet. These dual rated solutions offer operators the convenience of having two machines in a single piece of equipment by ensuring that both the crane standard of ASME B30.5 and the aerial standard of ANSI A92.2 are met based on configuration, set-up, and work to be performed.

Proper maintenance and inspection of your boom truck crane is vital to extending the life of your equipment. A full listing of maintenance procedures and intervals can be found in equipment maintenance manuals, with key components that include the boom, rotation system and hydraulic fluid. While your maintenance manual will cover all aspects of keeping your machine running as it should, some particular items of attention are mentioned below.

Boom Maintenance

Regular boom maintenance is key to increasing the longevity of your boom truck crane. Telescopic booms are steel structures designed to slide, making proper boom lubrication one of the most important steps in boom maintenance—and a key step to preventing many issues from arising. All sides of the telescopic boom sections should be lubricated once a month, or every 85 PTO hours.

Telescopic boom extension systems have critical parts that should be inspected regularly for optimal performance. Once a month, check all extend and retract cables for proper tension and abnormal wear, noting any stretching, overtightening or slack. Slide pads and retaining bolts should be checked monthly, as well.

Rotation System Maintenance

The rotation system is critical to the operation of a crane, and regular maintenance to keep the system in good working order will allow for smooth operation on the job site day in and day out.

The bearing itself should be greased every 85 PTO hours, or once a month. Most riding-seat Altec cranes have grease zerks strategically placed inside the operator cab to allow for easy greasing while the operator is in the seat.

Every 500 PTO hours, the rotation cap screws should be visually inspected, as well as inspecting the gear box to ensure the backlash is adjusted correctly. The bearing guard should be inspected for any obstructions that could cause damage or interference. Annually, inspect and measure the rotation bearing for wear and check the torque of rotation bearing cap screws.

Hydraulic Oil

Hydraulic fluid levels should always be checked prior to operation. Every 2,000 PTO hours (or every two years) the system should be flushed and the oil changed. Annually, an oil sample should be collected for testing fluid condition.

Get Total Control with GMT TTC System for Grapple Saws

In the tree care industry, precision is a necessity. When working in tight spaces—and against gravity—control of a cut piece is invaluable for efficiency and safety. To improve control on the job site, Altec now offers the GMT grapple saw with TTC system.

The TTC system, short for total tree control, gives operators just that—complete control of the piece that has been cut. Previously, cut pieces would automatically tilt down. With the TTC product, cut pieces remain upright until the operator is ready to tilt downward, allowing an operator to control the tree rather than gravity.

“The TTC product features a braking system in the linkage above the rotator. When activated, it locks that linkage and the tilt cylinder,” said DC Creekmore, Altec tree care product specialist. “Once I grab and cut, it holds that piece upright. I can move that crane out of the way, and once I’m free and clear of obstructions, release that system to tilt down.”

Not only does the TTC system offers operators the benefit of complete control when working in congested spaces, it also improves operator efficiency. With the TTC system, operators can make larger cuts and keep those cuts upright, when previously they would have made numerous small cuts to complete the same task.

This new and improved head is available on the complete line of Altec Effer Knuckleboom Cranes with grapple saws, including 60-, 68-, 92- and 120-foot cutting heights. For more information on the TTC head, contact product specialist DC Creekmore at dc.creekmore@altec.com.

Maximize Savings With Tax Benefits on Year End Purchases

The end of the year is fast approaching. Thanks to Section 179 and Bonus Depreciation tax benefits, now is a great time to purchase the equipment your company needs. Below, learn more about these tax benefits and how to maximize your savings while selecting the right equipment for your business.

What Bonus Depreciation Means for End of the Year Savings

Bonus depreciation allows businesses to deduct a more significant percentage of the cost of their purchased assets the year they are acquired instead of depreciating them for years.

Currently, bonus depreciation is at 100%, meaning if you purchase a piece of equipment by the end of the year, you may be able to deduct the full amount of your purchase.

According to the official website of the IRS, bonus depreciation “applies to business property acquired after September 27, 2017, and placed in service after September 27, 2017, and before January 1, 2023.”

Starting in 2023, bonus depreciation will be reduced to the following rates:

  • 2023: 80%
  • 2024: 60%
  • 2025: 40%

In order to receive your savings from this deduction, all your equipment must be purchased and put into service by December 31, 2022, at midnight. Due to continued supply chain challenges, consider purchasing or leasing as soon as possible to meet this deadline.

 Financing Options for your Business

If you’re interested in applying these tax benefits to your purchases, our knowledgeable finance experts at Altec Capital are ready to help you find the best options to achieve significant savings. If you want to take delivery at year-end, any equipment purchased through Altec Capital can be secured with no up-front down payment.

Altec Capital Financing offers deferrals up to 90 days, aggressive financing rates and variety of lease options

What Type of Financing Option is Best for Me to Receive Bonus Depreciation?

When choosing financing options, consider capital leases or equipment finance agreements.

Capital Lease
For accounting purposes, the Capital Lease is treated as if the asset were purchased. This type of lease is similar to an installment purchase and includes a bargain purchase option of $1 at the end of the term. With the same tax treatment as a loan, you can depreciate the equipment while deducting the interest portion of the payment. At the end of the term, there are no sales tax implications since there is no transfer of ownership. Learn more here.

Equipment Finance Agreements
An Equipment Finance Agreement is a loan product that helps increase your overall profitability. An EFA benefits customers who desire immediate equipment ownership yet want to pay for the equipment over an extended period of time. Learn more here.

Meet OSHA and ANSI Training Requirements for Tree Care Operators with Altec Sentry

For tree care professionals, tree removal or pruning can be time consuming and comes with many risks. At Altec, we understand the challenges our tree care customers face, and are here to help you keep your crews safe on the job.

“Any time an operator picks themselves up off the ground in an aerial unit, they’re introducing risk to their job,” said Andy Netzel, Altec Sentry business manager. “Altec Sentry’s goal is to help operators operate safely and efficiently, and make sure they get home at the end of the day.”

While innovations in equipment and technology have helped reduce some risk on the job, comprehensive safety training is still important—and required. For nearly 20 years, Altec Sentry has helped employers train and certify Altec equipment operators on safe and proper operation.

Many of the risks in tree care are unique to the industry, which is why Altec Sentry created a customized safety training course for tree care operators.

Meet OSHA and ANSI Requirements with Sentry Training

Completing training with Altec Sentry meets the ANSI and OSHA requirements for becoming a trained aerial device operator. To be fully trained, operators need to become familiar with each aerial device they operate. This requires learning the unit operating instructions and characteristics, as well as demonstrating proficiency in actual operation of the unit.

Altec Sentry offers many different safety training courses, including a tree care specific training that covers:

  • Safety Statements and OSHA Regulations
  • Tree Care Aerial Device Daily Unit Inspection
  • Aerial Unit Travel Considerations
  • Job Briefing
  • Unit Setup and Pre-Operational Inspection
  • Unit Operation
  • Line-Clearance Tree Trimming
  • ISO-GripTM System

In addition to equipment training, it’s also important to be well versed in drop-zone safety to reduce risks for operators and bystanders. Altec Sentry offers Tree Care Drop Zone training to teach operators how to establish and safeguard drop zones, as well as NCCCO certification programs for operators of mobile cranes and digger derricks.

“We offer a tree-care specific training because we recognize the inherent risks involved in the industry,” Netzel said. “Periodically, we review and update the training to ensure that it is fresh and relevant to tree care operators and the rest of the industry.”

Train Your Trainers

For customers looking to take ownership of their safety program, Sentry offers a Train the Trainer program. Sentry will instruct a customer’s safety liaison through training that they can then administer themselves to their organization’s operators; the customer trainers use the same materials as Sentry trainers and meet all OSHA and ANSI training requirements. Sentry will also assist customers in documenting and maintaining records of employees who have completed training.

“These customers will have an in-house, Altec-trained and Altec-supported trainer,” Netzel said. “Every time that customer hires new operators or a group of operators, they can get trained right away from that group of in-house trainers.”

About OSHA and ANSI Training Requirements

OSHA requires owners of vehicle-mounted elevating and rotating aerial devices to instruct their employees in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to the operator’s work environment. Furthermore, OSHA directs that employers follow ANSI industry practices to properly qualify aerial device operators. Training requirements defined by ANSI include general training, familiarization, and retraining. General Training is required for all operators and includes instruction on unit inspection, proper aerial applications, recognizing and avoiding hazards, and hands-on device operation among other topics.

How a Fair Market Value Lease Can Save You Money

As interest rates rise and material, fuel and equipment costs increase, maximizing savings and conserving working capital is more important than ever. With a Fair Market Value lease from Altec Capital, fleet owners can keep the monthly cost of equipment low, from payments to maintenance costs.

What is a FMV Lease?

FMV leases offer the flexibility of ownership and the lowest monthly payment with terms that match the useful life of the equipment.

With an FMV lease you can improve operations and productivity without the expense of buying the equipment outright or a high down payment. At lease maturity, you may opt to return the equipment and lease a new unit, however, customers can continue to lease on a month-to-month basis or purchase the equipment at its fair market value.

Operate a Truck During its Highest Useful Life

FMV lease terms range from 36 to 120 months, so customers can utilize a truck for its highest useful life. Once that term ends, customers can return the truck and lease a new piece of equipment, avoiding costly repairs and increased maintenance costs that can occur with older equipment.

A shorter life cycle often leads to lower repair cost and frequency, which means less downtime. This allows customers to spend more time in the field focused on operations and maximizing profits.

Fair Return Provisions

Altec believes in complete satisfaction in all aspects of a customer’s experience. Lease holders can rest assured that the same Altec customer service they expect will be provided throughout all phases of the lease, including the end of lease return process. Altec Capital account managers work hand in hand with customers to reduce end of lease expenses. Altec Capital’s ultimate goal is to create an end of lease customer experience that is seamless, equitable and fair.

Experience the Benefits of a New Truck

The FMV lease is ideal for customers who are eager to experience the latest innovation in new equipment. When FMV lease holders return their equipment at lease maturity they can then finance a brand new piece of equipment, complete with the latest technology. For many customers, the regular upgrade to a new piece of equipment boosts employee morale.

By working with Altec Capital, your account managers are monitoring current lead times for new equipment along with the term of customer leases, helping customers place orders that most closely match maturity schedules and life cycles.

About Altec Capital

Altec Capital’s focus is meeting customers’ unique equipment financing needs. Not only does Altec Capital finance equipment, but it also helps customers manage and maintain their equipment fleet. While our core business is financing Altec products, Altec Capital also offers financing for light duty trucks and other non-Altec, third-party equipment.

Most importantly, financing with Altec Capital is easy. Altec Capital offers a single source solution for all your financing needs, which means no more managing multiple banking relationships. Get Your Truck Ready with Customized Truck Kits

Your new truck has arrived, and your team is ready to get to work. However, if you don’t have the tools you need to stock it, getting that truck on the job may be a complicated process.

“When a truck comes in, customers don’t necessarily have everything ready, especially for a newer vehicle or a new to the fleet vehicle,” said Chris Knapp, Altec Supply sales manager.  “Warehouse teams then have to organize tools, possibly ordering from multiple manufacturers with different lead times.”

To save customers valuable time and money, Altec Supply offers customized truck kits that will arrive when your new unit does. These kits can be added to new, used and rental equipment so that your truck is ready to go to work when it arrives.

Get Your New Truck Ready to Work

Rather than waiting for various orders from various manufacturers to trickle in, a truck kit from Altec Supply comes complete with the tools you need to get the job done.

“When it’s all wrapped up in one, the tools show up right when the truck shows up, and all customers have to do is pull the tools out of boxes and put it in the bins they want, and out they go,” Knapp said.

Truck kits can be configured to include a range of tools and supplies from shovels to electrical test equipment based on the needs of the customer.

Combat Supply Chain Challenges

As global supply chain challenges continue, truck kits are even more valuable to customers.

Altec Supply account managers can help customers navigate longer lead times and stock shortages. As a truck is being produced, Supply account managers monitor manufacturer lead times to make sure products are ordered and will arrive before a truck’s completion.

“We’re aware of manufacture lead times and can order in an appropriate time to make sure the kit is complete when the truck is ready,” Knapp said.

Additionally, Altec has increased its ready-to-ship inventory at regional warehouses across the nation. Tools and supplies are stocked based on customer needs, meaning Altec has what you need when you need it.

If a tool is unavailable due to supply chain challenges, Altec Supply account managers assist customers with finding an alternative product. In many cases, this is a chance for customers to try a new and improved tool they may not have realized was available to them.

“We’ve got our finger on the pulse of what’s in stock and what lead times are,” Knapp said. “We’re here to help you get your kits in a timely manner.”

Get Personalized Assistance Outfitting Your Truck

Whether you’re looking to stock your truck with tools and accessories or to purchase items such as utility sunblock and bug spray, Altec’s Supply Store is your one stop shop for all the items you need.

Why Fleet Maintenance is a Necessary Part of Your Safety Program

Whether you know it or not, fleet maintenance has a big effect on your safety program. Complex equipment such as aerial devices, cranes and digger derricks are built to work hard in tough environments, designed to exacting national standards and intended to reward owners with a long service life. They are also a large investment that needs to be protected by following the manufacturer’s guidance for safe operation and maintenance.

It’s likely your safety team is hard at work enforcing safe work rules, implementing programs, compiling safety metrics and tracking OSHA reports. Meanwhile, a poorly maintained piece of equipment may be creeping closer to failure, threatening to undo all those efforts keeping workers safe on the job.

Make Maintenance Programs a Priority

Fortunately, Altec’s unit maintenance manuals give you extensive guidance on preventive maintenance schedules and detailed instructions on performing the important tasks that keep your equipment safely in service.

Your fleet needs the right kind of maintenance program, with inspection intervals timed for the severity of operating conditions. Heavily used units need more frequent inspection and maintenance. Think of the difference between a New York City taxicab and Grandma’s Crown Vic. Which one will need more preventive maintenance or repair?  Of course, sitting idle in the garage can also pose problems, but a well-designed fleet maintenance program will consider that too.

Take Your Training Seriously

Fleet programs are part of the equation, but there are human factors, too: the people using the equipment and the people maintaining it. Both groups could introduce risk or mitigation effects into overall operational safety. In large part, this depends on your effectiveness in two key training areas—training your operators and training your technicians.

Train Your Operators Properly

Trained operators break less equipment because they use it correctly. Too often, employers condone work methods that misuse and abuse equipment. This essentially trains operators to damage equipment, and it puts everyone at the job site at serious risk of injury.

Train Your Technicians Properly

Letting untrained technicians inspect and maintain complex equipment gives a dangerous false sense of security. If you don’t have trained mechanics who follow Altec’s maintenance procedures, call Altec Service. We have the resources to help keep your units safely in the field, protecting your workers and getting the job done.

Altec is Here to Help

Building a connection between your fleet maintenance and safety teams is a solid move toward protecting your workers. Start by asking the question, “How are we training our technicians and operators?”

If you need help, contact Altec Service to discuss maintenance training options. For operator training, contact Altec Sentry. Let our experts help you fix and operate your Altec units properly, putting your safety program on a better path toward prevention.
