Safety is Cool: Tips for Being Prepared and Safe During Winter Weather

Winter season will be here before you know it, but are you ready for the tough storms and bitter cold? Winter can be an especially challenging time for our customers in utility, telecommunications and tree care, and its unique challenges often require special attention to safety and security on the job. What’s more, power outages are happening twice as often in serious weather disasters, putting an even greater strain on utility workers across the country.

So what can you do to stay safe while working outdoors in winter? We have a few suggestions:

Proper equipment and clothing

Dressing with thicker, warmer layers is obvious enough, but what many don’t consider is the importance of staying dry and free of perspiration which reduces your internal body temperature as it evaporates. Having pants, jackets, and shirts with moisture-wicking can make a big difference.

In the same vein, having specialized PPE equipment for winter is essential for staying safe on the job. Whether it’s anti-fog safety glasses or insulated jackets with high-visibility colors, being easily seen and seeing easily helps prevent accidents.

Safe driving

Driving from work site to work site means a lot of hours on the road, and winter weather usually presents some of the most dangerous road conditions imaginable. While safe driving is always a focus for our customers, icy roads are a particular concern at this time of year. Driving at reasonable speeds is important as always but having work trucks equipped with helpful accessories like exterior vehicle lights, bucket covers, or backup cameras sometimes gets overlooked.

Learn the signs of cold weather health risks

Freezing, windy weather also brings specific health risks to workers spending extended hours in the elements like frostbite or hypothermia. These conditions have common tell-tale signs to look out for as a warning that your crew should address right away. For example, feelings of numbness, muscle stiffness, and discolored skin are some of the symptoms you should expect from frostbite.

One more way you can improve your working crew’s safety is by participating in our winter safety kit giveaway coming soon on Altec’s Facebook and Instagram. We’ll randomly select a winner in mid-December 2023, so be on the lookout for a notification if you’re chosen.

On behalf of Altec Supply, we encourage all our customers and families to stay safe during the winter season and to promote safety on the job at all times of the year. If you need new safety or winter preparedness equipment for your crews visit our online Supply store, contact your local account manager, or call 1-877-GO-ALTEC.

Maximize the Life of Your Altec Boom Truck Crane

Advanced engineering and rigorous testing make Altec boom truck cranes a reliable workhorse for your fleet. These dual rated solutions offer operators the convenience of having two machines in a single piece of equipment by ensuring that both the crane standard of ASME B30.5 and the aerial standard of ANSI A92.2 are met based on configuration, set-up, and work to be performed.

Proper maintenance and inspection of your boom truck crane is vital to extending the life of your equipment. A full listing of maintenance procedures and intervals can be found in equipment maintenance manuals, with key components that include the boom, rotation system and hydraulic fluid. While your maintenance manual will cover all aspects of keeping your machine running as it should, some particular items of attention are mentioned below.

Boom Maintenance

Regular boom maintenance is key to increasing the longevity of your boom truck crane. Telescopic booms are steel structures designed to slide, making proper boom lubrication one of the most important steps in boom maintenance—and a key step to preventing many issues from arising. All sides of the telescopic boom sections should be lubricated once a month, or every 85 PTO hours.

Telescopic boom extension systems have critical parts that should be inspected regularly for optimal performance. Once a month, check all extend and retract cables for proper tension and abnormal wear, noting any stretching, overtightening or slack. Slide pads and retaining bolts should be checked monthly, as well.

Rotation System Maintenance

The rotation system is critical to the operation of a crane, and regular maintenance to keep the system in good working order will allow for smooth operation on the job site day in and day out.

The bearing itself should be greased every 85 PTO hours, or once a month. Most riding-seat Altec cranes have grease zerks strategically placed inside the operator cab to allow for easy greasing while the operator is in the seat.

Every 500 PTO hours, the rotation cap screws should be visually inspected, as well as inspecting the gear box to ensure the backlash is adjusted correctly. The bearing guard should be inspected for any obstructions that could cause damage or interference. Annually, inspect and measure the rotation bearing for wear and check the torque of rotation bearing cap screws.

Hydraulic Oil

Hydraulic fluid levels should always be checked prior to operation. Every 2,000 PTO hours (or every two years) the system should be flushed and the oil changed. Annually, an oil sample should be collected for testing fluid condition.

5 Key Takeaways from Altec’s Fleet Electrification Summit

Gathering a wide range of customers and industry leaders, Altec hosted its first Fleet Electrification Summit in April. The summit featured presentations from industry experts, moderated customer round table discussions and equipment demos of Altec’s range of electrification solutions. Below are five key takeaways from the summit.

Customers have aggressive electrification goals.

Electrification technology has been evolving rapidly over the last several years, and the goals of customers are keeping pace. While all-electric medium and heavy-duty bucket trucks were only a thought for customers just a few years ago, they are quickly becoming a reality as OEMs continue to introduce new chassis.

Federal and state policies are also driving rapid adoption of electrification, be it through infrastructure incentives and funding or sales and purchaser requirements.

Electrification technology needs to meet the performance requirements.

Utility work comes with unique applications that need to be considered when choosing electrification options, and certain pieces of equipment are better suited for specific applications than others.

Given current technology and the state of charging infrastructure, all-electric bucket trucks will likely not be used in a storm restoration situation that requires extensive travel to a destination that has widespread power outages. With a range that can average around 135 miles in normal conditions, Altec’s TA60 on the International eMV does work well in a local application. Based on data collected by Altec, boom operation only impacts range by 10 miles on average, leaving plenty of range for local work.

Charging infrastructure takes planning.

At the forefront of any conversation about electrification goals is the topic of charging. What is required to support an electrified fleet? How many and what type of chargers will be needed? Where should they be placed? Will operators use them consistently? When considering your charging infrastructure, it’s important to think long-term to avoid having to reinstall your charging stations multiple times.

Altec’s all-electric solutions make planning infrastructure easier because they feature an integrated ePTO and chassis that are both powered by the same batteries. This means the truck only has one battery pack that must be charged and requires only one outlet to complete charging.

Fleet electrification is a journey.

While much progress has been made in the last decade alone, the road to fleet electrification is a journey. Although there are certainly applications for all-electric vehicles as the infrastructure stands today, some applications will still require a combustion engine for years to come.

Throughout the journey, it’s important to have an open dialogue about the state of technology and the unique needs of the utility industry. It’s necessary to address pain points and failures, but it’s also necessary to recognize the areas where electrification is a viable and preferred option.

Altec has solutions to help customers achieve their electrification goals.

For nearly 15 years, Altec has worked alongside customers to develop electrification solutions based on the unique needs of the key industries we serve. Based on this experience, Altec has developed a range of solutions designed for different applications.

The Jobsite Energy Management System (JEMS) is designed to reduce idling and emissions while still providing a diesel engine. JEMS supports a zero-emission jobsite, eliminating unnecessary engine idling by providing lithium-ion battery power to the aerial device and jobsite tools, as well as cab heating and cooling. All-electric bucket truck solutions are zero-emissions whether driving to the jobsite or working at the jobsite. Altec’s integrated ePTO solution uses the chassis’ lithium-ion battery power to power the chassis and the PTO as an integrated system.

As technology continues to evolve, Altec will continue to work with customers to identify their unique needs and provide comprehensive solutions without compromise.

It’s All About Relationships: SLECA Customer Testimonial

Matthew Peters, operations superintendent at South Louisiana Electric Cooperative Association, was familiar with Altec in his previous role with the company.

“All I knew from Altec before I met Ed, our account manager, was y’all were the bucket and derrick company,” Peters said. “Our buckets and our derricks were Altec.”

But when Peters assumed his current role and was interested in purchasing new assets for the company’s fleet, he experienced the total Altec value, working with Altec Capital to identify fair market value leases as a way to save the company maintenance costs while still getting custom trucks for his linemen.

“We realize that when we get to a certain age on some of these older trucks, our maintenance costs goes through the roof,” Peters said. “We looked at leasing because we don’t have to get cookie cutter trucks. We can actually spec our trucks to what the linemen want, so it fits us.”

FMV leases offer the flexibility of ownership and the lowest monthly payment with terms that match the useful life of equipment.

With an FMV lease, customers can improve operations and productivity without the expense of buying the equipment outright or a high down payment. At lease maturity, customers can opt to return the equipment and lease a new unit, continue to lease on a month-to-month basis or purchase the equipment at its fair market value.

While the lease affordability and flexibility are important factors for Peters, the decision to use Altec equipment and Altec Capital comes down to one thing—relationships.

“When I look at everything, it comes down to the relationship after the sale is done and the paper is signed,” Peters said.

 About Altec Capital

Altec Capital’s focus is meeting customers’ unique equipment financing needs. Not only does Altec Capital finance equipment, but it also helps customers manage and maintain their equipment fleet. Altec to Debut AC65E to Construction Market at CONEXPO

Altec AC65E-155S

In its introduction to the construction market, Altec’s new AC65E-155S will be on display at ConExpo March 14-18 in Las Vegas. At the show, Altec will feature a variety of cranes including the AC40E, AC45E, and the AC65E.

The latest addition to Altec’s equipment lineup, the AC65E is a dual-rated solution that offers both class-leading lifting capacity as well as industry-first personnel platform capabilities. The unit features 130,000 pounds of maximum lifting capacity with 155 feet of main boom length and can reach a platform working height of 215 feet when configured as an A92.2 compliant aerial device.

A two-stage hydraulic articulating jib brings boom truck operators features that are typically reserved for larger cranes. Previously found exclusively on machines much larger than the AC65, this jib allows for exceptional up and over lifting capabilities without sacrificing minimum pick radius.

The jib can be articulated from 0 degrees to -80 degrees with rated load on hook. The main boom features two selectable extension modes to maximize capacity both close to the machine and at larger radiuses.

The machine also features a 12,500-pound hydraulically removable counterweight that increases load capacity at high-radius picks and allows for an easy, one-man installation and removal from inside the cab. Swing-out-and-down style outriggers allow for the machine to be extremely rigid, aiding in operator confidence and providing a solid feel even when at the limits of the load chart. 22 inches of outrigger penetration and four span options provide the flexibility needed to set up on even the most difficult jobsites.

In addition to being the only machine in its class under 40 feet in length, it can also be configured to comply with federal bridge laws, meaning it can travel without any permits. As with all Altec products, the AC65E-155S is backed by the industry’s leading national support network and warranty protection.
